Frequently Asked Questions
Teaching FAQs
Can I learn to play the violin?
The violin is an instrument that requires significant care, attention and dedication. It is also incredibly beautiful and unique, and will allow you to express yourself wonderfully through music. I tend to take students from 5 years of age, with no upper limit. What all my successful students have in common, is a willingness to learn and be playful through music - if this is you, then you will really enjoy the experience.
Do I need a violin from day 1?
Younger students in particular will benefit from a few lessons introducing them to musicality, rhythm and the strings family of instruments. Beyond this, all students will need an instrument to really get going. There are a range of new and second hand instruments (full-size and smaller 3/4 sizes) available for purchase through local music shops which I am happy to recommend. If (or when) you are fully committed to investing in an instrument which will last a lifetime, I can certainly help with the process as each player and instrument is so unique.
What are your fees?
Optimal lesson durations will vary (mostly with age), as younger students will be concentrating fully for up to 30 minutes at a time, whereas more mature students will prefer a 60 minute session. I charge £70 for 60 minutes and £40 for 30 minutes for all lessons (face-to-face or online).
Where do you teach?
I am based in Guilford and give lessons either at my home or around Surrey or London. Recently I have also been teaching online with students locally and abroad, and have found this can work very well.
